Review: Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, and The Death Cure by James Dashner
Without his memory, Thomas is thrown into a world full young men trying to find their way out of the bad life they are living in. Unfortunately none of the boys have their memories and all they can do is run the maze outside the walls of their compound to find a way out. Inside Thomas mind is hidden the clues that he must put together in time to save everyone from the horrendous machine/animal grievers wanting to feast on them.
First book Thomas along with all the Gladers has no memory of why he is there or what they are suppose to do. Since the story is told from the point of view of someone without a memory, it leaves tons of mystery. No one including Thomas can tell what it means, especially after a girl shows up hold a note saying that the game is ending.
By the second book Thomas thought he had escaped the trials, but in reality he only escaped the maze in a very elaborate hox. Now he and his friends find they must cross the waste land that once was populated by normal humans but is now populated by the people infected with the disease. Dangers hide behind every turn, yet Thomas is determined to make it out again.
Cranks are slowly going mad and start eating others and themselves. So be forewarned, this is a bit of a zombie series from here on out. The second book followed the same format as the first, but in new scenery. Thomas is again being tested and again is growing more and more hateful of WICKED. We learn very little of WICKED but know there is another trial going on. This time however Thomas is not as lucky as the first time and they break their own rules to help him. I liked the set up for the last novel and will be reading the third next.
By the third book this series turned into an end of the world zombie take over. We get to see a ton of cranks first hand in this book and even see one of the supporting characters turn into one. If you want more zombie books to read, this is a good series to read. So we are left wondering if Thomas will choose his own safety or the possibility for a cure.
Fun series and good read.
